Marketing Podcast with Janine Kurnoff

In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast, I interview Janine Kurnoff. Janine is the co-founder of The Presentation Co and co-author of Everyday Business Storytelling: Create, Simplify, and Adapt A Visual Narrative for Any Audience 1st Edition.

Key Takeaway:

We’re living in a really noisy time where we’re constantly marketed to. Storytelling helps us break through the noise, and it helps us be heard in an authentic way — because in order to craft a narrative, you really have to walk in your audience’s shoes.

Business storytelling is this idea of taking the concepts of classic storytelling and then helping those of us in the business world make it practical and relevant. Janine Kurnoff has developed a simple, repeatable framework to help you turn your ideas and insights into an authentic, persuasive story. In this episode, Janine Kurnoff and I dive further into how to develop compelling business narratives.

Questions I Ask Janine Kurnoff:

[1:30] Why are all marketers telling us to tell stories?

[2:57] You have a very scientific, brain-driven framework for storytelling – can you unpack that a little bit?

[4:21] Out of the four signposts of a good story (settings, characters, conflict, and resolution) what are the ones people screw up the most?

[5:32] Can you give me an example of setting, character, and conflict?

[7:26] What role does the storyteller play?

[9:17] Do you always need conflict and do you have to create conflict when it doesn’t exist?

[12:13] When you’re giving people advice on what they should and shouldn’t do in their slide decks, what are the five things they should never do?

[14:20] Is there a difference in how presentations should be done depending upon the audience size or location (Zoom or in-person)?

[19:55] Where can people find out more about your work and your book?

Examining the Modern Energy Market

Our world is changing in many ways, and not the least of which is how we view and conserve the environment. Prioritization of clean energy has become one of the main topics we consider in the things we buy, the businesses we support, the homes and appliances we purchase, and even in the way we vote. Seventy-one percent of Americans believe that clean energy should be a priority, and by 2025, the global modern energy market is expected to reach $1.5 trillion.

The renewable energy market is booming. In 2019, the number of renewable energy powered homes had reached the equivalent of 43.5 million. Solar and wind generated power are the source of a combined 370,000 jobs and 37.7 billion dollars in investments. Vehicles are another area of growth with more than 3 million alternative fuel vehicles sold just in 2019.

Americans are concerned about the environment and nearly 50% would be willing to pay an average of $15 additional dollars per month to use clean energy in their homes. Three out of four Americans believe that clean energy will reduce water and air pollution by about 75% each.

The source of sustainable energy is largely built on batteries, as renewables such as solar and wind are captured intermittently. Solar power is captured during daylight, and wind is captured when it’s windy. In between times, that energy must be stored. Batteries are the solution to this storage problem.

Traditionally, we’ve used lithium-ion batteries for all kinds of storage since 1912. In 2021, it’s time for an upgrade. Vanadium flow batteries take energy storage to the next level. Their non-degrading and water-based construction make them the sustainable answer to sustainable energy storage. Learn more about the modern energy market in the infographic below:

Staying Secure Online

Remaining secure online isn’t easy anymore, especially as every 39 seconds someone gets attacked by a hacker online. Cybercrime is a growing concern, and in 2019 alone there were almost 160,000 security incidents, 81% of which linked to stolen or weak passwords. Staying secure online is now a problem for more people due to COVID-19 making more people work from home. 62% of Americans were working from home in 2020, 49% of them having never remote worked before. With so many new opportunities to attack cybercrime skyrocketed. Phishing attacks were up by 600% and ransomware attacks were up by 148%.

An efficient way of keeping passwords safe is using MFA’s, multi-factor authentication, to keep your passwords secure. However, most MFA’s aren’t good enough. Common MFA’s like sending a one-time code through email or SMS can be breached by a hacker intercepting the message. Security questions are often information that a hacker could find using social media or public records. Not only ineffective but these MFA’s are also inconvenient and annoying and require and the second device on hand meaning less trust and reliance by employees.

When passwords need to be reset and forgotten repeatedly, it creates a lot of friction between employees and the websites they just want to log into. Using passwordless authentication software can remove friction, remove the necessity for secondary devices that some people don’t have, and remove the inconveniences of conventional methods while still having better security against hackers.

Marketing Podcast with Itai Sadan

In this episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast, I interview Itai Sadan. Iati is the Co-founder and CEO of Duda – a website development platform used by thousands of agencies around the world to build sites for their customers.

Key Takeaway:

Duda started out with a simple idea and goal — to help small businesses boost their traffic with better mobile websites. But as they expanded their focus to responsive web design, they were able to grow into the all-in-one platform they are now.

Today, Duda serves thousands of agencies and has partnered with some of the biggest players in the industry. In this episode, I talk with founder Itai Sadan about the future of Duda and important web design concepts.

Questions I Ask Itai Sadan

[0:52] Can you tell me about the name of your company and what inspired it?

[5:14] What sets do to apart from that sort of sea of potential website builders?

[7:30] If someone is comparing in terms of just apples to apples for the Duda platform itself and its competitors, are there hallmarks of Duda that you think help it stand out?

[9:57] Is there an element of Dudas platform that has some of that extendability similarly to how WordPress is open source and allows people to develop around it?

[11:33] What are the current trends you are seeing a lot of when it comes to design in some of the newer sites that your agencies are building?

[15:59] Are you starting to attract pure ecommerce plays away from the bigger players like Squarespace?

[16:54] Course building is another thing that has been growing for many years — is that an area you’re focusing on as well?

[18:06] What categorically would you tell somebody you’re working on at Duda?

[19:12] If a small business came to you or that was listening to this, is that somebody that you would serve, or would you send them actually on to one of your agency partners?

Alexander Djerassi Discusses the Importance of Saving for College Tuition

Saving For College: What You Need to Know

As the years go by, it is known by both parents and students that the amount of money it costs to attend a four year university is steadily increasing. According to a 2019 report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, tuition at four year public universities have increased by 37%and net costs have increased by 24%. In the past ten years, average tuition costs have gone up in all 50 states. It is because of these statistics that entrepreneur Alexander Djerassi stresses to families that saving for college should happen as early on in a child’s life as possible. Unlike back in the 80’s when a four year university only cost around $13,000, planning and saving are the two most important things a parent can do to help their children succeed.

As an entrepreneur and a foreign policy expert, Djerassi has had a lot of success throughout his life. He was a special assistant for the U.S. Department of State as well as a chief of staff. He also was a campaign policy associate for Hilary Cliton when she ran for office back in 2016. His latest achievement is becoming the chief public servant and policy officer for a website called Mos.com. This website is designed to make it simple for students to apply for financial aid when it is time to head off to college. Unlike other companies, Mos.com pairs students up with an advisor that will guide them through every single dollar of financial aid that the student qualifies for. Knowing how stressful it is to pay for tuition nowadays, Alexander Djerassi wanted to help students ease their financial stress and help them prepare for these costs.

Below are some tips for how parents can prepare for college tuition:

Create a budget

When your child gets their first job or receives money from family members, it is important to budget that money and set some aside for college expenses. This will help teach children responsibility.

    Do your research

It is important for parents to keep up with the knowledge of just how expensive some universities are these days. Go online and do some research about which schools are the most affordable.

Become aware of financial aid guidelines

Your child will not be eligible for everything regarding financial aid. You can help your child prepare by focusing on which ones they can apply to and which ones they should not waste their time with.

    Again, start saving early

This will always be the most important tip of all. College tuition costs are showing no signs of slowing down, so it is best to get ahead of the curve and start saving for your child’s college education as soon as humanly possible.

We at Social Media Explorer understand that college savings and tuition costs can be an overwhelming topic to grasp. Alexander Djerassi wants readers to use this article as a tool to help guide parents through the stressful times that lie ahead. But just remember, the stress is only temporary and, with proper planning and saving, you will have the opportunity to give your child all of the necessary tools for them to succeed later on in life. If you have not done so already, go ahead and check out Mos.com and find out which forms of financial aid your student is eligible for and get all of the information and help that you need in order to send them on the right path. The stress and headaches will be worth it after all once they finally walk across the stage during graduation and receive that college degree!

Are There Ways to Navigate Workplace Politics

There is a lot that you need to do in order to make sure that you can find solutions for the big picture of what may be going on at your workplace. Whether you’re new or you have been at your workplace for awhile, you know that it can take some time to really figure everything out.

Workplace politics are never an easy thing to consider, and you want to be sure that you’re doing the best that you can in order to figure out where you may fit. How do you navigate these? Here are some tips that can help to make the process a little easier for you.

1. Understand Organizational Structure

First, you want to be sure that you have a fairly solid understanding of the structure that you’re working with. More often than not, the structure of your company is going to dictate what direction that the politics may be headed. Look into everything that you need to know about bureaucracy and work within that as you navigate the ins and outs of this whole thing.

2. Build Connections Quickly

The earlier that you start building connections with other employees, especially those who have influence and power in the organization, the better off that you’re going to be in the long run.

You want to feel comfortable with everyone at your company so that you can ask questions and sort out information when it comes down the pipeline. Plus, networking is always good, especially if you want to move up in the company or connect with outside resources.

3. Listen Well

If you need to stay ahead of politics at work then it’s absolutely essential that you learn how to listen well. Learn how to read body language and be sure that you are absorbing what others have to say. Not only will you be able to stay ahead of what’s going on in your company, but people will definitely feel more comfortable talking with you about things that may be going on.

4. Learn How to Communicate Well

Not only do you need to know how to listen, but knowing how to communicate well with others can go a long way when you’re navigating work politics.

How well do you talk with people? Do you respond to emails in a professional manner? Are you good at helping others with tasks they may not understand? Good communication is great for any team, and can go a long way if you want to do well at the workplace.

5. Don’t Be Nasty

Attitude is everything. You want to be sure that you’re friendly with everyone – yes, including the people who drive you absolutely crazy. You don’t want to gossip or speak poorly about anyone that you work with, because people talk and it will likely come back to you when you least expect it. it can be really detrimental for your mental health too – so be nice!

6. Be Wise About What You Share (And What You Don’t)

Too much private information and it could be used to blackmail you. Obviously, it’s fine to have workplace friends and to hang out whenever you want. But, it’s always a good idea to be careful about what you share and who you share it with. Otherwise, your private business may get out to people that you don’t want to know it.

7. Be Patient

Lastly, if you’re trying to deal with office politics, you want to be sure that you’re patient. There is always a lot going on every single day, and there are a lot of inner workings you need to sort out. But, if you’re patient and you learn as much as you can, you’re going to find that it’s much simpler for you to get ahead and get what you need from the structure and those in it.

As you can see, there are a lot of things that you need to be sure to explore and understand as you get into the nitty-gritty of workplace politics. You want to talk to people and follow these tips as you work out what is going to be best for you and your situation.

It isn’t always a straightforward process, but there are a lot of things you can do to make it easier. Explore as much as you can and be diligent – if you do things right, you can do well in your environment and stay ahead of the things that you want to be able to accomplish.

You might just be one click away from damaging your life(-brand)

Have you ever asked yourself how your digital fingerprint will impact your future? I am sure if you reflected on your lifetimes content library all the likes you gave away on your favorite social media platforms the posts and comments pictures and videos that feature you online as well as all those old Kodak photos your friend took 20 or 30 years ago that may still see the light of social media one day you would certainly not be able to recall every single piece of content that can possibly be tied back to you. Yet its out there regardless of your recollection. If not on someones phone your precarious image is buried under some old documents in a school friends drawer or packed in someones memory box in their closet. RescueTime tells us that the average adult swipes types and makes calls over the course of 3 hours and 15 minutes each day (the top 20% even spend 4.5 hours on their phones). In short 50 days per year are full of opportunities to make just one little mistake one post or comment that you might regret later in life. Maybe it will cost you your education or your job. Maybe it will cost you your family. Or if you are lucky it wont cost you anything other than data charges and you will be just fine. We all tend to share our thoughts on social media without being intentional at times unaware of possible repercussions especially on our so called private accounts we only share with family and friends- those accounts that feel safe and protected. How many times would you say you posted something because you thought it was funny at that time? How many times did you post after a few drinks and what you shared did not seem like a great idea the next day? How many times did you post based on an emotional reaction to something you read heard or saw? We have all been there. The danger is that everything we say and do on social media is on the record stored away in the cloud screenshotted on someones phone waiting to come back at us later in life with the potential to impact our career our family or our life. Our lifetime content library one that I call our life-brand is our digital fingerprint shaped by the collection of publicly accessible content shared by or featuring us including photos videos audio recordings social media posts and written statements or comments. This includes all possible content pieces that have not seen the light of day yet but possibly will in the future. We all possess one life-brand there is only ONE. It might be strong or it might be weak but our individual life-brand exists. Our life-brand takes control if we are not aware of it and gains power and strength over the course of our lifetime the more content we accumulate in the cloud. It is literally out of control. The good news is that once we become aware of it we can actively control it so we can arrive advance and thrive in the professional corridors of our livelihood instead of potentially tarnishing our education and career. Nobody prepared us for what could come after opening the social media floodgates through our first Facebook Instagram TikTok or Twitter account. Screen time is no longer a casual activity. A click a post in one breath can stain our reputation in just seconds. However if you frame your life as your life-brand you will indeed be able to use social media as the tool it was originally designed for and instantly recognize the risks your engagement could cause you. How to control your Life-Brand The concept of a controlled life-brand goes way beyond what we understand as personal branding that is the intentional effort to build credibility in a certain field advance ones career and build a particular identity. Life-brand also includes all of our actions and words that we unintentionally put on record through recordings private comments and posts and photos and videos we record or others record of us. It identifies one person as distinct from another and is defined by a persons unique purpose and identity through their everyday displayed public behavior and chosen language in the real and virtual worlds which ultimately shapes the publics perception about the life-brand owner. Life-brand expands the definition of personal branding as an intentional effort of using your purpose in life to impact change to build (early) confidence and to be comfortable with self-promotion (I am particularly addressing my female readers with the last point). Life-brand takes into account your public display of (un)intentional language and behavior or how you portray your identity to others. While personal branding is clearly defined as intentional efforts to advance your career and increase influence life-brand develops itself with or without your control with or without your intention. Like personal branding life-brand can positively influence your development and career if understood and controlled. If unaware of its power or existence your life brand can negatively impact your career and future career family and aspirations by virtue of disadvantageous public perception of you. Considering this additional component of life-brand you might be perceived by the public in an inaccurate way based on interpretation of your unintentional behavior or language that might not reflect your true identity. The image below shows the elements that control everyones life-brand. It consists of two components: your identity and your chosen purpose in life. Identity in the context of life-brand is defined as the summary of your behavior and language displayed through social media or in the real world while purpose can be discovered through the vehicle of a passion an idea your profession or expertise in a certain field or an interest or hobby you pursue. Managing the combination of and connection between identity and purpose is crucial to truly controlling a life-brand rather than being controlled by it. This means your behavior and language must be in alignment with your chosen purpose and need to be portrayed with integrity. That is the case for social media as well as behavior and language displayed in the real world because a public outburst can also make its way as a viral internet video. Sharing your purpose with the world through social media channels is an intentional controlled effort you undertake. Make no mistake it is not random. Public display of purpose can lead to significant positive impact on others and our community thanks to the vast reach social media channels have these days. When a life-brand is owned and controlled it is created by both public perception and positive impact and becomes a powerful vehicle to impact reach and influence others. When the concept of life-brand is understood controlled and proactively developed with integrity between purpose and identity the concept enables us to establish a unique life-brand voice powerfully influencing others who listen and inspiring them to take action in response. We can protect ourselves from possible social media missteps simply by having awareness that our life-brand exists. But the earlier we understand the concept and the possibilities we have to actively control it the bigger the opportunity to use social media as a tool to drive our careers forward impact positive change in the world and our communities and help educate the next generation of social media users on following our example.
