First, you want to be sure that you have a fairly solid understanding of the structure that you’re working with. More often than not, the structure of your company is going to dictate what direction that the politics may be headed. Look into everything that you need to know about bureaucracy and work within that as you navigate the ins and outs of this whole thing.
2. Build Connections Quickly
The earlier that you start building connections with other employees, especially those who have influence and power in the organization, the better off that you’re going to be in the long run.
You want to feel comfortable with everyone at your company so that you can ask questions and sort out information when it comes down the pipeline. Plus, networking is always good, especially if you want to move up in the company or connect with outside resources.
3. Listen Well
If you need to stay ahead of politics at work then it’s absolutely essential that you learn how to listen well. Learn how to read body language and be sure that you are absorbing what others have to say. Not only will you be able to stay ahead of what’s going on in your company, but people will definitely feel more comfortable talking with you about things that may be going on.
4. Learn How to Communicate Well
Not only do you need to know how to listen, but knowing how to communicate well with others can go a long way when you’re navigating work politics.
How well do you talk with people? Do you respond to emails in a professional manner? Are you good at helping others with tasks they may not understand? Good communication is great for any team, and can go a long way if you want to do well at the workplace.
5. Don’t Be Nasty
Attitude is everything. You want to be sure that you’re friendly with everyone – yes, including the people who drive you absolutely crazy. You don’t want to gossip or speak poorly about anyone that you work with, because people talk and it will likely come back to you when you least expect it. it can be really detrimental for your mental health too – so be nice!
6. Be Wise About What You Share (And What You Don’t)
Too much private information and it could be used to blackmail you. Obviously, it’s fine to have workplace friends and to hang out whenever you want. But, it’s always a good idea to be careful about what you share and who you share it with. Otherwise, your private business may get out to people that you don’t want to know it.
7. Be Patient
Lastly, if you’re trying to deal with office politics, you want to be sure that you’re patient. There is always a lot going on every single day, and there are a lot of inner workings you need to sort out. But, if you’re patient and you learn as much as you can, you’re going to find that it’s much simpler for you to get ahead and get what you need from the structure and those in it.
As you can see, there are a lot of things that you need to be sure to explore and understand as you get into the nitty-gritty of workplace politics. You want to talk to people and follow these tips as you work out what is going to be best for you and your situation.
It isn’t always a straightforward process, but there are a lot of things you can do to make it easier. Explore as much as you can and be diligent – if you do things right, you can do well in your environment and stay ahead of the things that you want to be able to accomplish.
